Our doors first opened in 1946 making us one of the longest established practices in Northern Ireland and the oldest in Ballymena. Being associated with the community for two generations gives us a unique element of continuity. Five years ago we had a complete refit on all three floors, carried out by an award-winning designer. Todays image is very different to that of 1946, but our principles remain the same.

We have both youth and experience on our team and what we uniquely bring to the whole experience of an eye examination is an informal, relaxed, friendly environment and high quality of eye-care and eye-wear. Hugh acquired the practice in Ballymena in 1982. He has over 40 years of experience in optics and eye health. Hugh is married to Jan and they have three children, one of whom (Claire) is now an Optometrist in the practice.

Claire joined the family practice 3 years ago. She has particular interests in macular degeneration, examining patients with special needs and children's eye care.
Services
If you/your child are experiencing difficulties following text, gets headaches when reading, jiggles in their seat when trying to focus on text or complains that the words move around they may have a form of visual dyslexia.
Some dyslexics find it easier to read text that is on coloured backgrounds rather than white.
Black text on a white background can often seem to glare or even flash, making it difficult to focus on the words and causing fatigue.
Some dyslexics find it helpful to read with a coloured sheet of transparent plastic (acetate) over a white page or a coloured background on a computer screen, while others find it makes no difference.
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging test.
OCT uses light waves to take cross-section pictures of your retina.
With OCT, our Optometrists can see each of the retina's distinctive layers.
This allows us to map and measure their thickness.
These measurements help with diagnosis.
They also provide treatment guidance for glaucoma and diseases of the retina.
These retinal diseases include age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic eye disease.
Modern technology is advancing extremely quickly and this sophisticated scanning equipment allows us to provide the best eyecare possible to all our patients.
Good eye health and eye care are crucial to protect not only your sight but your general health also.
It is vital therefore to be pro-active about the health of your eyes.
At b h mckeague we endeavour to help you do that.
Our optometrists are extremely experienced and with the help of up to date, modern technology, we ensure at all times that eye health is our number one priority.
Perhaps, but they are also the portals through which we can see signs of eye disease and indeed, a myriad of systemic diseases - diabetes, cardio-vascular disease, blood pressure, m.s.
After the age of five however, the cortical brain cells which control vision are mostly matured and intervention more unreliable.
It is essential to have your children's eyes examined pre-school, even as young as one or two, even if everything looks normal.
Children's frames have also come of age.
No longer is it a stigma to wear glasses, in fact the reverse is the case, making your child the envy of his or her classmates.
Our dispensing optician Tom is a specialist in paediatric frame selection and complex lenses.
The term eye wear is used to describe spectacle frames.
We stock budget and designer products - from vintage to modern, hand-made to acetate, tortoiseshell to horn-rimmed to rimless.
Fashion eyewear has come of age.
Our designer range is extensive - Ray Ban, Christian Dior, Prada, Hugo Boss, Oakley, Silhouette, Coco Song, Marc Cain and Police.
To compliment a beautiful frame you also require a beautiful lens and lens technology has also come of age.
