R. J. Holmes Opticians are independently owned practices, located in Cirencester and Swindon. We are dedicated to providing total eye care for the whole family, and are proud to offer a personalised service to all our patients. We have invested in the latest advanced technology to offer you the most comprehensive eye examination, ensuring not only the correct prescription for your spectacles, but a complete and thorough health check.

Each person has individual visual requirements, and as such selecting the most appropriate lenses and frames is extremely important. We use the latest technical advances in lens design, from a range of different lens manufacturers, to ensure we select the lenses that best suit your needs. We can offer tailor-made visual comfort, exactly adapted to the special requirements of your individual eyes.

And fashion definitely does not take a back seat - we have an extensive range of frames to suit your individual style and budget. Our eyes are unique - they provide us with one of the most important senses we have, and this is why the exact analysis of your sight is so crucial to us.
Services
An eye examination is usually recommended at least once every two years.
This is because an eye examination involves a thorough health check of the eyes, as well as checking whether you require a new prescription.
Remember this is not a substitute for a full examination, but it will give you an idea whether there are any problems with your vision which should be addressed.
It is a thorough health check of the eyes and can also identify general health conditions.
It is important for us to know what has prompted you to have an eye examination - is it just time for a check-up or have you been experiencing any problems or concerns?
If there are any concerns, we will ask you a few questions about these to help us pinpoint what is causing the problems, for example whether it is affecting one eye or both, and when you first noticed the problem.
Information about your general health is also very useful as some eye problems can be linked to systemic conditions.
A contact lens aftercare is not the same as an eye examination.
We can combine the two into one appointment to make things more convenient for you, so when booking your appointment be sure to let us know if you are a contact lens wearer so we can allow enough time.
Contact lens aftercares are extremely important as you do not always experience symptoms if there are health problems occurring.
It is also a legal requirement - you must have an up-to-date contact lens aftercare before we, or anyone else, are permitted to supply you with contact lenses.
OCT stands for Optical Coherence Tomography.
It is a complex technology that looks in detail at the structure and layers of the retina.
We mostly use this instrument to look at two main areas of the retina.
This is the most sensitive part of the eye, and is the part you use when you are looking at something directly.
If anything occurs in this area, it can have serious effects on your vision.
Common diseases that can affect this area of your retina include age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.
We believe in investing in the most advanced technology in order to offer the most comprehensive eye examination we can.
The optomap ultra-wide digital retinal scan from Optos plc allows us to image areas of the retina we cannot normally see using conventional methods.
The retina is the delicate lining at the back of the eye, similar to film in a camera.
It collects light and uses this to create a picture of the world around us.
This information is then sent to the brain which processes the information, allowing us to see.
