Services
Wallace Opticians was founded in Shotts over 55 years ago by Matt Wallace.
The business was relocated to Whitburn when son Robert (Bob) Wallace succeeded his father.
In 2015, Elinor Todd took over the business - having worked as a locum in the practice for over a decade prior.
In 2021, Alan Conway became the new owner-Optometrist upon Elinor's retirement.
In the post-pandemic era, Alan aims to preserve the core philosophy of the practice - service to the community and maintaining the tradition of a high level of customer experience instituted by the Wallace's over half a century prior.

There is vast array of spectacle lenses available in a multitude of formats which can be both overwhelming and confusing!
Single vision lenses are just that - single vision.
As we get older our close range focus can need a little help.
In this instance, some people choose to move into a bifocal lens which predominantly provides distance vision with a small segment in the bottom third of the lens designed specifically for reading.
Bifocals are a good basic lens but can be quite limiting in their use as they lack an intermediate section which aids arms-length distance working, for example a computer, supermarket shopping, the dashboard of the car and of course the dreaded ironing!

Just like spectacles, contact lenses are available in different formats and a consultation with our optometrist will give you the opportunity to discuss whether or not contacts are the right option for your eye health and your lifestyle.
Assuming your prescription is compatible with contact lenses, your selection will ultimately depend on which type is the most comfortable and convenient for you to wear and our optical experts are at hand to assist you in making the right choice.
The cost of contact lenses varies according to type and it should be noted that they are not eligible for NHS support.

When buying sunglasses (with or without prescription) always look for a British Standard Mark, a UV 400 label or a European CE Mark.
This ensures your lenses provide adequate protection from both UVA and UVB light.
The British Standard sets performance levels for quality, strength, stability, design and manufacture as well as the amount of UV light they let through.
We would generally encourage you to choose a frame that is slightly larger than your usual spectacles as the larger surface area of coverage will minimise light seepage.

Wearing glasses does not make your eyes 'weak, ' or 'dependent' on glasses.
In most cases, glasses will actually help to relieve strain on the eyes and to relax the eye muscles.
Wearing glasses as prescribed can help our sight to develop normally and achieve its full potential.
Recent evidence has shown that under correction of certain types of prescription can in fact accelerate a deterioration.
Some children do receive vision screening in school - this is usually done around the age of five.
The primary aim is to find those children with reduced vision or binocular vision problems, so they can be referred to a local optometrist or hospital eye service for further investigation, and treatment if necessary.
