An eye test is a vital health check for your eyes and could save your sight.
Adults should have an eye test at least every two years, and some people may be advised to have a test more often.
It is never too soon to start your childrens' eye care.
We advise that children have their first check at around 3 years old.
During the eye test the optometrist or eye doctor checks if you need glasses, but we do much more than that too.
When you have your eyes examined, we check for eye diseases like glaucoma that you might not be aware that you are developing.

When you reach the point of not being able to read up close without stretching your arms out, you need to consider prescription reading glasses.
Ready-made reading glasses are fine for occasional use, however most people do not have exactly the same prescription in both eyes.
Headaches, eye strain, and even nausea can result from wearing reading glasses that are not made to your individual prescription.
Also, don't confuse reading glasses with glasses for VDU and computer use.
If you're using reading glasses to try to view your computer screen, you may strain your eyes and cause headaches.

Good vision is critical to a child's early educational, functional, and social development.
Parents should be aware that it is essential to address the child's visual needs as early as possible.
Healthy sight can contribute to a healthy start in life.
The eyes continue to develop during childhood.
The majority of children at birth are long sighted which, if within normal limits, will correct itself as the child matures.
However, if a refractive error is not properly corrected there is a risk of permanent poor vision and squints/lazy eye.

Sunglasses should not only reduce light transmission, but should also offer protection from hazardous radiation.
All sunglasses dispensed by Gardener & Basson provide 100% UV protection.
Although most solar UV radiation is absorbed by the earth's ozone layer, a very small amount still reaches the retina.
UV absorption by the eye may contribute to age-related and other changes in the ocular tissue and a number of serious eye conditions.
Polarised lenses offer the best anti-glare performance and are recommended for use on and around water (for example for fishing, sailing and water skiing).
