Belson & Sons Opticians
In accordance with NHS guidelines, we are still able to make face-to face appointments for Urgent or Essential Eye Care during the second lockdown. Please call 0800 980 3464 for further information and to make an appointment. We are an independent family-owned group of opticians, now with a third generation family member on the team. We have four practices in Essex and one in London's Docklands.

For over fifty years we have been providing family eye care and a wide range of optical services, catering for all sections of the community. We believe that our professionalism and high standards of service are second to none, and our range of contact lenses, frames and spectacle lenses from manufacturers all over the world provide something for everyone, from entry-level budget glasses to haute couture designer frames.

A visit to the opticians begins with an appointment to see one of the optometrists for a Standard Eye Examination. We thrive on dispensing the best possible lenses regardless of whether your prescription is fairly standard or really complex.
Services
Now with five branches, Belson & Sons was founded by Leonard P. Belson in 1955 when he established the Docklands practice in London's East End after leaving the Royal Army Medical Corps.
He went on to become one of the UK's leading practitioners, especially in the emerging field of contact lenses.
He carried out research with some of the pioneering contact lens laboratories of the day, much of which was published in the professional journals.
The group is now operated by Leonard Belson's sons, Simon and Seth, and Simon's son Ethan.
For most people, a visit to the opticians begins with an appointment to see one of the optometrists for what is often called a "Sight Test".
However, at Belson & Sons we prefer the term "Standard Eye Examination".
We provide a sympathetic service to small children (including infants - we are happy to see children at any age), the elderly and those with special educational needs.
We provide a Domiciliary (Home Visit) Eye Examination Service under contract to the NHS for patients who are unable to attend one of our practices without substantial assistance.
Q: What is the difference between a Dispensing Optician, an Optician, and an Optometrist?.
A Dispensing Optician (D.O.) is a qualified Professional who specialises in ensuring that the glasses you choose are appropriate for your prescription, correct for the job or hobbies you want to use them for, and (rather importantly) that they suit you and look good.
A D.O. must be registered with the General Optical Council of Great Britain, especially if they dispense glasses for children or those with Impaired Vision.
What glasses you're using or have used previously - if you wear glasses please bring them with you, along with any copy of the prescription from your previous eye test.
This is the core of our clinical services, and we take great pride in the skill and experience of our highly qualified optometrists, who will carry out some or all of the following.
If you are bringing a child for an eye examination, especially for the first time, we will probably ask you about any family history of eye problems, together with details of any problems during pregnancy and birth, as these can often be important clues as to any eye problems we may find.
Because of the further tests, extra time is allowed for your appointment, and you should expect it to take at least 45 minutes overall.
There is a reduced fee for this comprehensive service compared to having all the extra tests charged individually.
We may recommend this service if you need a very thorough investigation of particular problems with your eyes, or you can simply opt for this service if you would like the most advanced and comprehensive eye examination possible.
We open our eye tests to young children in the areas of London, Grays, Corringham, Pitsea and Witham.
